Wedding Band Staged Reading

  • Badger Rock Neighborhood Center 501 East Badger Road Madison, WI, 53713 United States (map)

Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black & White depicts a tragedy involving an interracial affair. The action takes place over a period of three days near the end of World War I. The setting is 1918 South Carolina where state law prevents interracial marriage. Julia, a black woman and Herman, a white man are lovers of ten years. They would like to escape the south and move to the north where they would be free to marry, but Herman is not free to leave, since he must repay money borrowed from his mother when he purchased his bakery. As the story opens, Julia and Herman are celebrating their ten years together. Faced with the disapproval of her neighbors, Julia has been forced to move several times; it is clear that she is lonely and discouraged. While the law poses the very real threat of arrest and criminal punishment for any interracial couple who marry or live together, the condemnation of Julia’s black neighbors is just as damaging.
